About the Artist.

Mike Hennigan lives in Ithaca, NY with his partner Ritza, as well as their two bonsai garden guard cats Robert and Dottie. Mike has been practicing bonsai since 2013 and has been making bonsai pots since 2018. Having grown up in the forests of the finger lakes region he is very passionate about exploring the potential of our native deciduous trees as bonsai, like hawthorn, American hornbeam, hop-hornbeam, and serviceberry among others… though there are no shortage of conifers in his garden. Mike’s pottery work is heavily influenced by the clean lines, attention to detail, and intentional symmetry of the classic Chinese and Japanese bonsai pots. But also by the natural symmetry and flaws of organic forms like plants, animals, and stone. His goal is not to throw tradition out the window, but to build on on it. He firmly believes that the role of the bonsai container is to highlight and complement the tree, not the other way around.
